PURE MEDEA
Is Medea funny? Are actors tragic?

Its 2019, a theater company rehearse Medea, the ancient tragedy of marital discord, palace intrigue, gender politics, and murder. Set during one of the companys final run-throughs, PURE MEDEA intertwines the machinations of Medeas revenge upon her husband with the smaller tragediesand petty rivalriesof the performers personal and professional lives.

Starring Sophia Barrett, Hallie Martenson, Joshua McLucas, Homer Robinson, Lauren Suchenski

Medea by Euripides. Translation by Sheila Murnaghan, (W.W. Norton & Company, 2018). Concept and Additional text by Josh McIlvain. Costume design by Adrena Williams. Lighting design by JJ Jury. Production assistant: Iva Fabrikant. Directed by Josh McIlvain.

Monday May 6 and Thursday May 16 performances feature post-show discussions with with Sheila Murnaghan, translator of Medea, Norton Critical Editions (2018), and the Alfred Reginald Allen Memorial Professor of Greek at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to her translation of Medea, she has recently co-authored the book Childhood and the Classics: Britain and America, 1850-1965 and co-edited Hip Sublime: Beat Writers and the Classical Tradition. She is currently working on a new translation of Sophocles Antigone. Moderated by Christopher Munden, founder and editor of Phindie.com.
